Free choice

In your third year, you have 45 EC of free choice in the programme, with at least 15 EC at level 2 or 3. You can use this to specialise by taking disciplinary courses (within the departments of philosophy, history, economics or politics), to do a second thematic package, take an internship, do a minor, or go on an exchange programme to study at a university abroad.

Please note that it is not allowed to take MA courses as elective in your BA programme.

Free choice (45 EC)

Choice of:

  • Minor
  • Second thematic package
  • Study abroad
  • Internship
  • Free courses

Minor

A Minor is a coherent package of four courses belonging to a different field of study than your major. At UU, you can choose from more than 100 different Minors. You can also choose a Minor at another university. For this, you have to request approval from the board of examiners.

Study abroad

If you choose to study abroad for a semester, the foreign courses can count as an optional course package or be included in the free choice electives of your programme. This always requires approval from the board of examiners.

Internship

You can use part of your elective credits (7.5 to a maximum of 15 EC) to do an internship (at level 3). You arrange your internship via Osiris Case. An internship abroad is an option, but this does require more preparation time than an internship in the Netherlands.

If necessary, discuss with your Study Advisor how you can fit an internship into your curriculum.

Free courses

For your electives, you can choose from:

  • courses within your major (e.g. from another specialisation)
  • courses outside your major from the entire range of course offered by the UU, where you can sort by theme.
  • courses provided by another educational institution
  • courses that you may need to be admitted to a Master's programme

Avoid overlap

Please note that there are courses that you are not allowed to choose in your free choice area as they contain too much overlap with the content of the courses in your programme. Below you can find a non-exhaustive list of courses that you are not allowed to choose from. If you have any doubts about other courses, please contact the study advisor.
