Electives & Minor

As electives (your optional course profile), you choose components with a total study load of 60 EC, of which at least 15 EC at level 2 or 3. You can choose electives from another discipline, or in preparation for a Master's programme

Your electives consists of:

An optional course package of 30 EC in which you can choose the following:
- a minor at Utrecht University.
- a second specialisation within Media and Culture. You don't need approval from the Board of Examiners for this option, but please do inform them of your choice by putting in a 'pro forma' request for approval through Osiris student. If you have a second specialisation, there can be a maximum of one course overlap with your first specialisation. You can choose another elective instead. If your second specialisation has an overlap of more than two courses you cannot do that second specilisation.
- a minor at another Dutch university. This requires the approval of the Board of Examiners.
- a foreign exchange programme. This requires the approval of the Board of Examiners.
Free choice of 30 EC, for example:
- a workshop.
- internship (max 15 EC).
- a second minor.
- free courses

Make sure you choose courses of the appropriate level; you need to take at least 15 EC at level 2 or 3. And do not forget to check the entrance requirements for these courses.

Are you following two bachelor's programmes? Then you can often fill in your optional course profile with courses from your other bachelor's programme. Discuss the possibilities with your study advisor.

Avoid overlap in content

When choosing courses for your optional course profile, make sure that there is no overlap with other courses in your program! The following courses have too much overlap between them. Starting from 2023-2024, you may not include the courses listed below in your bachelor's program. If you have participated in these courses before, they will continue to count. This list is not exhaustive, so if you hesitate about taking a course, please contact your study advisor.

Electives

You can choose:

courses within your major (e.g. from another specialisation)
courses outside your major from the entire range of course offered by the UU
courses provided by another educational institution
courses that you may need to be admitted to a master's programme

Business Economics

The minor Business Economics is relavant in case you are mainly interested in the organisation of institutions and companies and if, in the future, you aim for an administrative, policy-related or management role in the field of media and culture, you may be interested in taking the minor Business Economics, in addition to the Media and Culture major.

Child and Adolescent Relationships and Development or Youth Studies

If you would like to focus on issues relating to youth, young people and education within the field of culture and media, the social sciences can offer a supplementary perspective. The following minors or separate modules from these minors could well be interesting: Child and Adolescent Relationships and Development or Youth Studies

Creative Cities

The minor Creative Cities deals with the steadily growing role that media and culture play in the shaping of the city, in contributing ideas about the future of the city and in working on solutions for all kinds of urban challenges currently facing cities (such as sustainability, liveability, mobility, inequality, privatisation, etc.).

Entrepeneurship

De minor Entrepeneurship might be useful for those of you who consider starting their own company and becoming an entrepreneur in the field of media and culture

Gender

The minor Gender Studies teaches you how aspects of gender, ethnicity, sexuality and religion, and related issues of inclusion and exclusion and of power relationships, are expressed in both the production and reception of media and culture and also in the media objects themselves.

Multicultural Society

The minor Multicultural Society studies issues relating to migration, integration, cultural differences, nationalism and prejudice, and do you find it interesting to study these not only from the perspective of media and culture but also in terms of the social sciences.

Postcolonial Studies

Many of the current conflicts and forms of inequality in the world (black/white, Western/non-Western, religious/non-religious, etc.) can be traced back to, and understood in terms of, the colonial past. The minor Postcolonial Studies analyses how this inequality is expressed not only in media and culture, but also – in broad terms – in society and politics.

Sociology: Contemporary Social Problems

Do you believe that media and culture can help contribute to solving current social issues? In the minor Sociology: Contemporary Social Problems you will learn to study social issues from a social sciences perspective and to arrive at policy solutions.
