Electives

Within your elective space, you will choose components with a total study load of 60 EC, with at least 15 EC at level 2 or 3. The elective space consists of an optional course package and free choice. The optional course package is a cohesive set of courses in which you delve deeper into a subject either within or outside your field of study. In the free elective space, you can choose three courses that do not need to be related to each other.

Please note: it is not allowed to take MA courses as elective in your BA programme.

Optional course package (30 EC)

Choice of:

  • Minor
  • Second specialisation
  • Study abroad
Free choice (30 EC)

Choice of:

  • Workshop
  • Internship (max. 15 EC)
  • Second Minor
  • Free courses

Workshop

You can take one or more workshops of 7.5 EC (at level 3) in your elective space. In a workshop, you work jointly and under supervision on a (research) project closely related to professional practice. Think, for example, of research commissioned by a professional partner (a company, an institution, a maker). There is a limited number of places available and priority rules apply, so register in time.

Minor

A Minor is a coherent package of four courses belonging to a different field of study than your major. At UU, you can choose from more than 100 different Minors. You can also choose a Minor at another university. For this, you have to request approval from the board of examiners.

Second specialisation

You can choose to take a second specialisation of your own BA programme. You do not need approval for this, but you do need to inform the board of examiners of your choice. You do this by means of a (pro forma) request for approval.

Study abroad

If you choose to study abroad for a semester, the foreign courses can count as an optional course package or be included in the free choice electives of your programme. This always requires approval from the board of examiners.

Internship

You can use part of your elective credits (7.5 to a maximum of 15 EC) to do an internship. You arrange your internship via Osiris Case. You can choose between different types of internships:

  • level 2 (practical internship)
  • level 3 (research internship)
  • an internship abroad (this does require more preparation time than an internship in the Netherlands, see the drop-down menu further on this page)

If necessary, discuss with your study advisor how you can fit an internship into your study programme.

Free courses

For your electives, you can choose from:

  • courses within your major (e.g. from another specialisation)
  • courses outside your major from the entire range of course offered by the UU, where you can sort by theme.
  • courses provided by another educational institution
  • courses that you may need to be admitted to a Master's programme
