1. Taal en samenleving
In the specialisation Taal en samenleving, we study social, political, and linguistic aspects of language variation at many levels. We explore how this variation can be studied and captured in language typologies, and examine the link between linguistic structures and phonetic patterns.
2. Language and Cognition
In the specialisation 'Language and Cognition' we study the general principles on which our language ability as part of our cognitive system is based. Underlying these are mental processes that have their origins in abstract properties that describe the structure of natural languages.
3. Language and Computation
In this subject cluster you learn how to use computers to process and model language and speech. You learn about the statistical methods that are used for this (like regression analysis) and about the formal properties of language (as in the theory of automata) and about existing applications in this domain.
