Electives & Minor
As electives (your optional course profile), you choose components with a total study load of 60 EC, of which at least 15 EC at level 2 or 3. You can choose electives from another discipline, or in preparation for a Master's programme.
Please note that it is not allowed to take MA courses as elective in your BA programme.
Your electives consists of:
- An optional course package of 30 EC in which you can choose the following:
- a minor at Utrecht University
- a second specialisation within your chosen degree programme. You don't need approval from the Board of Examines for this option, but please do inform us of your choice by putting in a 'pro forma' request for approval through Osiris student.
- a foreign exchange programme (this requires the approval of the Board of Examiners)
- Free choice of 30 EC, for example:
- an internship (max 15 EC)
- a second minor
- free courses
In the Blackboard Community of the BA Linguistics you find information about minors, internships, and electives that are potentially interesting for you. Are you following two bachelor's programmes? Then you can often fill in your optional course profile with courses from your other bachelor's programme. Discuss the possibilities with your study advisor.
Minor
You can choose between over a 100 different minors. A minor is a coherent package of 4 courses that belongs to a different field of study than your major. You can choose a minor
- because a certain minor is a good preparation or entrance requirement for the Master's programme you want to apply for (look this up!)
- because you would like to gain more in-depth knowledge in another field of study
- to raise your social or academic profile
Interesting Minors for students of Linguistics
- Celtic Languages and Culture
- English Language and Culture
- Child and Adolescent Relationships and Development
- A language Minor (German, French, Italian, Spanish) for students who are interested in multilingualism and language learning (partly in Dutch)
Electives
You can choose:
- courses within your major (e.g. from another specialisation)
- courses outside your major from the entire range of course offered by the UU
- courses provided by another educational institution
- courses that you may need to be admitted to a master's programme
