What you can do yourself
Reflection on and development of yourself as a professional
- Explore your options through information meetings on the optional course profile (minor, internship, studying abroad) and the Honours track
- Find out more about the Master’s programmes through open days and career prospects on the Master’s websites
- Find out what interests you through lectures, workshops and extra-curricular events (e.g. Studium Generale)
- Attend alumni events organised by your degree programme or Albion
- Find out what qualities you have and develop skills through volunteering, a side job or board/committee work
- Participate in a Skills Lab workshop to develop your skills: e.g. presenting, debating, pitching, graphic design
- Become a Language Assistant and learn how you can use your language skills to help others
- Make an appointment with your internship coordinator or the career officer
- Year 3:
- Participate in one of the workshops on self-analysis for Career Orientation organised by Career Services
- Take the online tests offered by Career Services
Exploring the job market and networking
- Check out Your Perspective (monthly) to hear alumni talk about their work
- Attend the Humanities Career Night for workshops, alumni and inspiration
- Explore possible careers on Master’s websites
- Go on the field visits organised by Albion
- Attend alumni events organised by your degree programme or Albion
- Attend the Drongo Language Festival and network with organisations that concern themselves with the impact of language
- Find out where alumni work with the alumni tool on LinkedIn
- Join the LinkedIn group Utrecht University English Language and Culture
- Look at job ads: what knowledge and skills are required? (e.g. through UU Job Board, Humanities Internship Database, cultural vacancies, etc.)
- Year 3:
- Participate in Career Services workshops on Exploring the Job Market or LinkedIn (Advanced)
- Learn more about networking through Career Services
Profiling & applying for a job
- Year 3:
- Have your CV and/or (internship) application letter checked by Career Services
- Participate in the workshop on Writing a CV and Cover Letter organised by Career Services
- Submit a mock application to the career officer
- Watch instructional videos produced by Career Services
What the programme offers you
Contact with the field
- Lectures/talks with guest speakers (professionals)
- Go on the field visits organised by Albion
- From year 2 onwards, you can do an internship. Make sure you attend the internship information meeting
- Do your thesis in collaboration with an organisation with support from teachers and other students doing Community-based Research in the Humanities
Contact with alumni
- Alumni regularly attend information meetings or the alumni events organised in conjunction with Albion
- The degree programme has a LinkedIn group which students can join
- Become a buddy under Albion’s ‘alumni buddy project’ and link up with one of the alumni
Academic and professional skills
- You will be trained to think, act and communicate in an academic way and you will be able to communicate effectively in English (see the EER)
- Do an internship (abroad)! Acquire professional skills and practical experience and put your academic skills into practice (in a practical or research-based placement)
Reflection on your qualities, interests and motivation
- Choices in your major and optional course profile to find out what interests you and what qualities you have
- Careers activities in tutoring sessions or individual meeting with your tutor
