Specific information for Humanities
If you want to apply for an exchange, you must meet the following criteria:
- During your exchange, you are enrolled as a full-time student at Utrecht University.
- You have completed at least 60 EC of your Bachelor before the start of your exchange.
- The courses you follow during your study abroad must be included in your study programme.
If you meet the conditions, you will also need the below document to apply for an exchange:
The application form is available for download here.
Follow the instructions in the form and make sure you fill in all parts completely and in English before uploading the document in your Osiris application. The form is an important part of the selection, especially if there are more applications than places.
For faculty-specific destinations selection is based on your entire application, with a focus on the application from. We determine your suitability based on your academic background, language proficiency in the language of instruction and chosen courses if applicable. We always start with the first choice. In the event of more applications and equal suitability, we will allocate the places by drawing lots.
If your choices contain university-wide destinations, the university-wide International Office will process those applications. If there are more applications than available places, selection will be based on drawing lots.
Do you know which partner university you will be attending and have you enrolled in courses there? Then you need to request approval from the Board of Examiners for all the courses you will be taking. You can do this through Osiris. The Board of Examiners will assess whether the courses are of sufficient academic level and check for any overlap with your study program.
Note: It is not a problem if you have enrolled in courses other than the ones mentioned in your study plan. It is possible that courses may be cancelled or that you may change your plans. The study plan is primarily a way to prepare yourself well for your departure.
Utrecht University's policy is based on the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs' travel advice. In principle, you are not allowed to travel abroad for an exchange, internship or other study-related activity in a region for which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued travel advice of the classification orange or red. You may therefore only travel if there is a green or yellow travel advice.
Please note! Students who travel abroad despite the orange or red travel advice will not receive any credits for the study components in question.
Do you want to travel abroad despite a negative travel advice from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs? Then you must submit an official request for an exemption.
In some cases, it is possible to study abroad despite a negative travel advice. The faculty board can grant exceptions, but they have limited room for such cases. They consider the following criteria:
- You are already residing abroad and have found an internship or study opportunity there. Therefore, you do not need to travel. This criterion usually applies to international students.
- You must complete a specific study component abroad that has no alternative and cannot be completed in the Netherlands. According to Utrecht University, there are sufficient guarantees that your safety and health will not be at risk.
If you wish to submit an exception request, please fill out this form and email it to the Education Director of your department:

The Harting Scheme is the oldest internationalisation programme in Europe, set up in 1945. It is intended for English degree programme students at six Dutch universities, allowing you to study at a renowned Irish, Welsh or English university for a full year and have your fees waived. It is a prestigious exchange programme that would appeal to ambitious students wishing to gain first-hand experience of life in Britain/Ireland, improve their knowledge and use of English, and in some cases teach Dutch. Your academic work during the exchange will be integrated into your programme at UU.
Who can apply?
To be nominated for a Harting Scholarship, you need to have finished your first year courses, be motivated and independent. You also need to demonstrate why a year’s study at the particular participating university you're applying for, will enrich your study of English Language and Culture. You can apply for a place in the Harting Scheme in your second year, and will go abroad in your third year.
More information
Information meetings will be held in Block 2, to help you prepare for the application deadline in January. Invitation to these meetings is by email only: t.j.hagar@uu.nl; deadline December 1st.
If you have any questions, please contact the UU coordinators: Dr. Roselinde Supheert or Dr. Trenton Hagar.

Thymen van Beusekom
Harting Scholar Academic Year 2021-2022
Bangor University, Wales
"I am very grateful that I got the opportunity to spend an academic year in Bangor. The beautiful university building, the welcoming campus and the beautiful nature in the area (mountains, waterfalls, coasts) make this place truly special.
The freedom I had to study subjects outside of my usual field (such as French and Spanish literature) and the quality of the courses have helped me develop greatly in my academic knowledge and skills. My courses also sparked my interest in the Welsh language and its literature, something I will continue to pursue in the future. Teaching Dutch was also a very fun experience and made me fall in love with teaching!
My Harting year was full of unforgettable experiences that led to wonderful friendships and made me know myself better as a person. It also convinced me that I want to move back to the UK in the near future!"
Alleen in overleg
