Entry Requirements

Look carefully at the entry requirements of the courses and whether there is a placement committee.

The programme’s core courses are designed to give you a solid understanding of the theoretical foundations of conflict studies and human rights, and to equip you with the basic skills necessary for doing research aimed at subsequently producing a Master's thesis.

The thematic focus of the programme will be both on the dynamics of conflicts and on the problems of national and international military or humanitarian interventions, such as those executed by the UN, NATO, and non-governmental organizations. The core courses include:

• Theories of Violent Conflict
• Peace, Security and Politics
• Data in Conflict
• The Conflict-Human Rights Nexus
• Preparing Research Project
• Contemporary Conflict Themes

You are given the freedom to select, à la carte, a programme trajectory of your choice for the third and fourth block of the Master's programme. In keeping with the general objectives of this Master's programme, the purpose of offering you the opportunity to customise your programme trajectory during block three and four are threefold:

• To enable you to experience, through first-hand social research, the dialogue between Ideas (Theories) and Evidence (Data).
• To permit you to experience and observe first hand how international organisations work and function in settings of peace and conflict by way of an internship.
• To expose you to the practice and process of designing and implementing a viable research project.

Those who opt for an internship will, in addition to producing an academic Master's thesis, also be expected to write an internship report. The internship report is a mandatory requirement in partial fulfilment of the Master's programme in Conflict Studies and Human Rights for those who undertake an internship.

If you wish to deviate from the curriculum, you must first ask your programme’s Board of Examiners for approval or exemption. In case your request is granted, the changes will be processed in OSIRIS and integrated into your exam programme and Study Progress Review.

In order to graduate, you will need to meet your programme's exam requirements as described in the Education and Examination Regulations. Based on these criteria and your Study Progress Review, the Board of Examiners determines whether you have graduated. The courses that are listed on your Study Progress Review will appear on the International Diploma Supplement (IDS), the attachment that you receive with your diploma. Note that courses listed under the heading ‘Results-Other’ are not part of the examination syllabus and do not appear on the IDS.
