Conversion of performance grant into a gift
A request to convert the performance grant is only possible if it is clear that, due to your disability or chronic illness, you will never be able to obtain a higher education diploma, even within an extended graduation term.
Such a request must be supported by a medical certificate. More information about this provision can be found on the DUO website.
No conversion possible
You cannot apply for conversion of the performance grant if:
- You decide to travel or work, or
- Your delay is caused by temporary circumstances, such as a non-chronic illness or the death of a family member.
Impact on Your Student Finance
If your request is approved by DUO, your performance grant will be converted into a gift. If you previously received a performance grant for an MBO program, this will remain unchanged.

The student counsellor will assess your request based on legal criteria. If the counsellor determines that you qualify for a provision, you will receive the necessary forms. The counsellor will also explain the further procedure.
