Skills Booster: Academic Writing Style
Academic writing style is unfortunately not a one-size-fits-all concept. A literature review may require a different style than a research paper and, at the same time, teachers also have different tastes. On the other hand, what is almost always required is that your text is written in a very precise style. In the video below, we indicate what to look out for.
Checklist after watching the video:
- When you read back your text, look very critically at each word: is the reader getting a clear picture and can it not be filled in in different ways?
- Pay attention to reference words: this, that, it, these, therefore: is it clear what they refer to?
- Clarify vague wording: look for numbers, definitions and sources. Tables and figures can help you present information precisely.
- Use the W.I.E.B.I. strategy: complete for yourself this sentence: ‘What I Actually Mean, Is ....’. This often produces a clear formulation.

- Want to improve your academic style, writing skills and structure? Then sign up for a workshop or course Scientific Writing.
- Want to spar with someone about the style of your text? Then make an appointment with one of the Skills Lab writing tutors. They have a scheme with 6 ‘style dimensions’. This will help you get a better grip on the style of your piece.
- As a student or employee of Utrecht University, you can use KU Leuven's Online Writing Tool. Enter your own text here and check where you might use vague words. You can also have other aspects of academic style flagged, such as formal or cumbersome language use.
