Life Sciences and Society
Curious about how science shapes—and is shaped by—society? The Life Sciences and Society profile invites you to broaden your perspective and explore the cultural, historical and ethical dimensions of life sciences research.
You will examine how public values, worldviews and societal debates have influenced the development of the life sciences — and how research, in turn, can contribute to societal progress. This profile helps you understand the impact of science beyond the lab and equips you to reflect critically on the role of research in our diverse, ever-changing world.

Introduction
The profile begins with an introduction to help you connect with fellow students and build a strong learning community. You will take part in workshops and training sessions that equip you with essential research and communication skills. During this phase, you will also be assigned your capstone project and meet your dedicated research and writing coach.
Capstone project
At the heart of the profile is the capstone project, where you will explore how life sciences and society influence one another. Working in a team, you will tackle a real-world issue provided by external partners such as RIVM or Sanquin. With support from your supervisor and writing coach Dr Christine Fox, you will develop your research questions, design your study, analyse findings and present your results at a final symposium attended by stakeholders—an ideal chance to showcase your work and build professional connections.
Modules
Alongside the project, you will complete six thematic modules that deepen your understanding of societal issues. Each module feeds directly into your capstone work, with regular team meetings to apply what you’ve learned and ensure steady progress.
