| EC | 120 |
In this programme, you are part of a dynamic and interdisciplinary community focused on understanding the brain and behaviour — from molecule to mind. This research-driven programme gives you the tools to explore neural development, brain networks, cognition, and the biology of psychiatric and neurological disorders. Whether you specialise in Experimental and Clinical Neuroscience or Cognitive Neuroscience, you will engage directly with cutting-edge research.
Year 1
Begin your journey with the Life Sciences Academy (1.5 EC). Early on, you will choose one of two dedicated programme tracks, which will shape your academic path and research direction throughout the degree. All students will take part in the introductory course (15 EC) to delve into all aspects of the areas of research. Additionally, you have room to complete your Elective Component (12 EC).
Compulsory components
Compulsory course
- Introductory course: ‘Fundamentals of Neuroscience and Cognition’
Year 2
In the second year, you will focus on specialisation and the practical application of your knowledge. You will continue or complete your Major Research Project (51 EC) and follow one of the Profiles (33 EC). You will finalise your studies with a Writing Assignment (7.5 EC) that sharpens your scientific communication and analytical skills.

Additional information
At Neuroscience and Cognition Utrecht (NCU), researchers from Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht join forces to unravel how the brain works — ranging from molecular mechanisms to behaviour and cognition. Through collaboration across disciplines, NCU advances fundamental understanding and innovative solutions in brain research.
Showcase your research and organisational skills by taking part in the annual Mind the Brain symposium, a student-led event featuring presentations and talks from international keynote speakers.
Further enhance your academic experience by contributing to the Journal of Neuroscience and Cognition, a student-run publication that offers hands-on experience in scientific writing, peer review, and publishing. These activities not only complement your studies but also prepare you for future roles in research and academia.
