Online courses
You may choose to take an online course as part of your elective component. For online courses offered by the GSLS, no approval from the Board of Examiners is required. However, if you wish to take an online course outside the GSLS, prior approval from the Board of Examiners is mandatory. Please note that any fees for online courses are at your own expense.
Requirements for online courses
An online course must meet the following criteria:
The course is at Master’s level.
The course is offered by a renowned university (Dutch or international).
The course includes individual assessment by an examiner.
If the course is not offered by a renowned university (e.g., via edX or Coursera) and/or lacks individual assessment, you must find a UU/UMCU examiner to conduct an individual exam (e.g., an oral exam).
In all cases, you must obtain approval from your programme coordinator.
How to Request Permission
Send an email to the Board of Examiners, including the following:
The online courses you wish to take.
The course description or a link to the website, including assessment details.
A link to the website explaining the credit system of the university.
If applicable: a statement from the UU/UMCU examiner confirming responsibility for the individual exam and specifying the exam format.
Written approval from your programme coordinator, ensuring there is no overlap with other courses in your Master’s programme.
Submit your request at least two months before the course starts. The Board of Examiners will respond within six weeks, informing you whether the course is approved and specifying the number of credits awarded.
Registration of course results
After completing the online course, submit the certificate or official document from the university to the Board of Examiners. If the assessment was conducted individually by a UU/UMCU examiner, submit the examiner's statement. The Board of Examiners will register your course results accordingly.
