Curriculum outline

The basic outline for the GSLS Master’s programmes is essentially the same. It facilitates interdisciplinary relationships in scientific disciplines and programmes. As indicated below, the study programme comprises a total of 120 EC.

Each Master's programme involves completing a Research Project, choosing a Profile, and taking specialized Courses. You will also participate in the Life Sciences Academy, which includes seminars and workshops for professional and personal development. Additionally, you will complete a Writing Assignment, and have the option to use Elective Components for extra courses, research, or skill development.

Specific curriculum components

Major Research Project | 51 EC

You'll complete your major research project in a UU/UMCU research group, gaining practical experience in all aspects of scientific research, from experiment design to writing a report or scientific article. Guided by a mentor, you'll also engage in discussions and journal clubs to contextualise your work. The project ends with a written report and an oral presentation.

Profile | 33 EC

As part of your study programme, you will select one of nine profiles to focus your education in a specific direction. These profiles offer different structures: some include a research project and a flexible curriculum, others have a more defined course list and assignments, and some combine both approaches.

Courses | 15 EC

Most of the GSLS Master’s programmes devote ten weeks to theoretical courses.

Elective Component | 12EC

The elective component allows you to tailor your personal profile by choosing education that enhances your competencies or skills, whether in research, academic, or soft skills.

Writing Assignment | 7.5 EC

You will write a review that presents a literature overview, includes a discussion or evaluation of hypotheses, and offers your personal perspective. Alternatively, you can write a research proposal following the NOW-ALW open programme format.

Life Sciences Academy | 1.5 EC

The compulsory Life Sciences Academy (BMB509718, GSLS-ACAD) is a 1.5 EC module featuring courses, workshops, seminars, and career events. It covers academic education, life sciences topics, and job market preparation.
