Research groups that are related to the programme Cardiovascular Health & Disease focus on the mechanisms, treatments, and/or prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The cardiovascular research domain in Utrecht can be subdivided into cardiac diseases (e.g. heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies, and myocardial infarction), vascular diseases (e.g. atherosclerosis, stroke, aneurysms), blood diseases (e.g. coagulation disturbances), and cardiovascular risk factors (e.g. diabetes, obesity, and hypertension). Within these areas, students are able to conduct projects within the full spectrum of research: from molecule towards population.
PhD programme
Our programme is directly linked to the PhD programme Cardiovascular Research of the Graduate School of Life Sciences.
According to the World Health Organization cardiovascular disease is worldwide the main cause of death in both men and women. With the current aging population and rise in cardiovascular risk factors, this is not likely to change without a collective effort. To address this challenge the strategic program Circulatory Health creates scientific and societal value by connecting cardiovascular researchers, clinicians and teachers into an internationally recognized UMC Utrecht Circulatory Health Research Center (CHRC). The CHRC encompasses a wide range of activities in clinical, translational and basic research with translation to the clinic and cardiovascular education.
