Becoming friends with the unknown; moving abroad for a PhD
Author: Maud Reugebrink
Many Dutch students often struggle with uncertainty about their post-graduation path. In Nicole's case, this uncertainty led her to consider leaving the Netherlands for a PhD adventure in Zurich. In a recent conversation with Nicole, we explored the motivations that have fuelled her decision to find academic and personal growth in a foreign country.
Nicole's conviction is clear – right now is the perfect opportunity for her to take this bold step. Unburdened by the responsibilities of a home, children and obligations, she seizes this unique moment to move abroad for an indefinite period. "It's something I've always wanted to do," she tells us. Nicole's eagerness to meet new people and immerse herself in diverse cultures reflects her curiosity about a world outside of her own bubble.
However, it's not just about learning about others; Nicole also hopes to find personal growth through this journey. Stepping outside her comfort zone and embracing the unknown may not always be easy, but she believes that it's the perfect recipe for personal development. She highlights that "getting to know yourself is a solid foundation for better mental health."
Be curious
While the promise of adventure and personal growth is clear, there is another layer to Nicole's move abroad. She is also stepping into a world of scientific discovery. Her research in Zurich focuses on a critical global health issue: malaria. With her project, during which she will dive into the complex lifecycle of the malaria parasite, she commits to making a meaningful impact on the world.
When asked to give advice to young professionals considering an international career, Nicole’s answer is simple yet profound: "Be open and curious about your future life and trust the process." Moving abroad can feel like a leap in the dark, but Nicole's choice to let curiosity win from fear characterizes her attitude towards the unknown. This positive mindset, she explains, significantly increases the chances of success.
Seize opportunities
For students doubting whether they want to chase their dreams far away from the comfort of friends and family, Nicole’s story might be the final push. She reminds us of our power to seize opportunities, despite uncertainties that may come along. Having few attachments at the start of your career is an ideal beginning for an academic and personal adventure abroad. The world awaits!
