One Health

After completing the Master’s programme One Health, you will be prepared for a career in academia (PhD) or in a more applied setting, including communication, education and consultancy.

Careers prospects are broad and can vary from scientific research, science journalism and education to jobs in the private, public, or non-profit sector. We expect that most of the graduates of the Master’s programme One Health will enrol in a PhD programme in the field of One Health or other life sciences within Utrecht University or other Universities in the Netherlands or abroad.

Outside academia job opportunities are available at institutes such as The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, Public Health Service, The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, Feed companies, EU, WHO and FAO.

The One Health Master’s programme trains students to become multidisciplinary researchers at the interface between humans, animals and the environment. The One Health approach in research involves interdisciplinary research by collaborations between physicians, veterinarians, epidemiologists, microbiologists and ecologists, to monitor, study, evaluate, model and control public health threats. This is realised by studying how diseases spread among people, animals, and the environment.

The programme is hosted by the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS), which is a research institute within the faculties of Veterinary Medicine, Medicine and Science of Utrecht University. The IRAS is a member of a number of national and international research partnerships and is also a WHO collaborating centre. In addition, IRAS is connected to different institutes outside Utrecht University, such as The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, Animal Health Service Center, Wageningen Bioveterinary Research, and Erasmus University Rotterdam.
