Study programme

The first year of the SHP programme is primarily devoted to course work on the fascinating and emerging research field of behavioural regulation. Specifically, in four theoretical courses we emphasize and learn to understand the basic affective and cognitive processes involved in behavioural regulation and their application in the domains of social behaviour and health behaviour.

Furthermore, in one statistics course (multivariate analyses) and two integrative courses you will learn how to test theoretical ideas empirically and are familiarized with methodological procedures to strengthen your experimental skills.

In addition to these courses, you also have the opportunity to participate in ongoing research projects during a research training which will cover all relevant aspects of conducting a study.

The second year is primarily spent on preparations for the Master’s thesis and writing the thesis.

During the first semester you can choose an optional course. Furthermore, you will participate in a second research training project that sets the stage for your Master thesis. In addition, you will get training in writing a thesis proposal, setting-up a study relevant for testing your thesis, and how to analyse your data and write up your thesis.

The second year will be completed with writing the Master’s thesis.

The courses have an intensive format with written (research) assignments, class presentations, final papers, written exams, or short exercises. For each course a course manual is available in the electronic learning environment Blackboard. In these manuals you will find more detailed information about the content, aims and structure of the course.
