Internship

The internship is a key part of the Master’s programme, where you begin your journey as a scientist-practitioner in neuropsychology. You will apply scientific knowledge in a professional setting, developing as a clinical practitioner. The internship allows you to connect theory to practice, gain new skills, and reflect on your development. There are two types of internships: clinical and innovation/research.

Clinical internship

During the clinical internship, you will experience the daily work of a neuropsychologist in clinical practice, diagnosing and treating people with cognitive disorders. You will work in an external organisation (such as a (academic) hospital, nursing home, rehabilitation center, psychiatric institution, or private practice) under supervision from an external healthcare or neuropsychologist. A clinical internship is an important prerequisite for obtaining your BAPD after graduating.

Innovation/research internship

An innovation/research internship focuses on applying scientific research to develop innovative assessment or treatment tools in healthcare, such as using eye movement recordings or virtual reality. You will apply your knowledge and develop skills in communication, diagnostic assessments, using scientific literature, and reporting.  Note that it is not possible to obtain the BAPD certificate through this internship.

Finding an internship

You must find your own internship placement. Especially if you want to do a clinical internship, it is important to start looking early, preferably by April, before the programme begins.

What are the possibilities for international students?

Clinical internships in Dutch institutions are only available to students who are fluent in the Dutch language, as the work and reporting are done with Dutch-speaking patients. International students without this proficiency must seek internships in their home countries or English-speaking countries. Innovation internships are available to both Dutch and non-Dutch speakers.

For questions or to discuss your options for a clinical internship, contact the internship coordinator at masterneuropsychologie_KLstage@uu.nl. All (international) clinical internships must be approved by the coordinator.

Doing an internship abroad?

Internships abroad should be scheduled in the second semester, after the coursework has been completed. You must register your stay in OSIRIS. More information about the registration procedure can be found on the Study abroad page.
