Internship

The internship is a key part of the Master's programme, where you begin your journey as a clinical practitioner. It helps you connect theory with practice, gain new skills, and reflect on your development. There are two types: clinical and research. To become a clinical therapist in the Netherlands, you must complete a clinical internship.

Clinical internship

The clinical internship focuses on mental healthcare for adults, including psychodiagnostics and treatment. You will connect scientific literature to clinical practice in settings like mental healthcare institutions, university clinics, hospitals (e.g., medical psychology departments), or rehabilitation centers.

Research internship

You become acquainted with as many phases of the research process as possible, actively participating in an ongoing research project within mental healthcare, at a research institute studying this area, or at the university. You develop competencies connected to different phases of the empirical cycle.

Finding an internship

You must find your own internship placement. It’s important to start looking early, as soon as you know that you have been (conditionally) accepted, before the programme begins.

Are you an international student?

Clinical internships in Dutch institutions are only available to students who have a strong command of Dutch (C2 level), as the work and reporting are done with Dutch-speaking patients. International students without this proficiency must seek internships in their home countries or countries where they can speak the language proficiently.

Doing an internship abroad?

Internships abroad should be scheduled after the coursework has been completed. You must register your stay in OSIRIS. More information about the registration procedure can be found on the Study abroad page.
