MyWorkPlace: software for free

You can access software that you need for your studies, such as SPSS, Mathematica, Nvivo, Matlab or Stella, from anywhere. From now on you will be able to use the software for your studies in a very flexible way. And you'll be able to do that when and where you like using whatever device you want. During your degree programme you may:

  • Use Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Skpe) 
  • With a licence that allows you to use it on 5 different devices

Use your UU e-mailadres and Solis-password to log onto the Microsoft website. From here you can follow the instructions for installation.

Please note: If you're asked to enter a product key, click on 'sign in to an existing office 365 subscription'.

A Google Apps for Education account is automatically created for all students and gives you:

  • UU Gmail mailbox with an address
  • Google Docs, Sites, Agenda and Chat
  • Google Drive

Mathematica is a software application focused on mathematics. It uses symbolic language (mathematical formulas).

Local installation on your PC

You may install Mathematica on your own PC. There are versions available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS.

  1. First, create a Wolfram ID, using your or email address. Other email accounts do not work.
  2. Then you can request an activation code on the portal of Wolfram. You will receive the code and download links directly on the screen via email.

Every year you will receive an email to confirm you are still a student; this prolongs your license for another year.

Matlab (developed by MathWorks) is a multi-paradigm numerical computing environment and fourth-generation programming language. Matlab allows matrix manipulations, plotting of functions and data, implementation of algorithms, creation of user interfaces.

Local installation on your PC

The campus license of Utrecht University for Matlab allows students to install MathWorks software on their personally-owned computers.

Summary of Steps:

  1. Create a Mathworks account using your email address.
  2. Associate the licence. After logging on, click at the top right on your user name. Select 'My account'. Click top right on 'Associate License'. Enter the Activation Key.
  3. Download Matlab. For the most recent version, click on the download button and save the installer.
  4. Install and activate the sofware. Windows users: double click on the Installer named matlab_<version number>_win64.exe (see your download folder. Mac users: double click on the Installer named matlab_<version number> - whitch will extract the files in the folder named matlab_<version number>_maci64. Start the Installer by double clicking InstallForMacOSX.
  5. Select “Log in with a MathWorks Account” and follow the instructions on your screen. Select the licentie you want to use and the products you want to download & install. Check the box 'Activate Matlab'' and click "Next". Follow the instructions until the activation is completed.

Matlab online / mobile

In addition, you have free access to Matlab Online and Matlab Mobile. With Matlab Online you can access Matlab in your browser by logging in with your MathWorks account. You can now work everywhere with Matlab, including desktops on which this application has not been installed. You can also share files with others or across different applications. You can find free Matlab apps also in the Apple App Store or Google Play.

The Microsoft Imagine Premium Webstore (formerly called Dreamspark) offers free Microsoft software with a valid Windows licence. Log in with your Solis-id and password.

Please note: this software can only be used by students and teachers of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to learn/teach design, development and testing of software applications, and researchers STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to perform non-commercial research.

Access is limited to employees and students of the Faculty of Science.

SPSS is a statistical support package used in teaching and research.

  2. Enter the license code from the text file you find here

CtrlWORK is the 'new' Wellnomics WorkPace. CtrlWORK helps computer users to find their optimal work/rest rhythm. The stretch software prevents physical and mental fatigue. As a result your productivity increases as you can sustain higher energy levels and better concentration.

Windows version

  1. Download the software (the website is in Dutch) and install on your computer. In the CtrlWORK Download Center you'll find the Quick Start installation guide.
  2. To use the software, you have to activate the license. Log on using your Solis-id and password on this page and download the file data.key. 
  3. Open CtrlWork, click Help – License – Upload new license, and upload the downloaded key-file. You will see the new License expiry date. 

MAC OSX version

Mac users can install the alternative MacBreakz. Determine your version of OS X. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner, and click on “About this Mac”. Now select your OS X version below:

Mac OS X version 10.6.X: Download the installation instructions and user manual first, followed by the software.
Mac OS X 10.7.X and above: Download the installation instructions and user manual first, folowed by the software.

SAS (Statistical Analysis System) is software for analysing and reporting on data. SAS University Edition is a free version of SAS. This version is specifically intended for people working at higher education institutions, such as universities. To download this version, you must first create an SAS profile. UU has an SAS group licence, Education Analytical Suite (EAS): a package of more than 20 products, including SAS Bridge for ESRI, SAS/IntegrationTechnologies, SAS/OR and Base SAS Bas. The Educational Suite has a far wider range of functions than the free University Edition and can be purchased at Surfspot for home use for around €30.

Think-cell facilitates the creation of charts on Microsoft PowerPoint presentation slides from Microsoft Excel data sheets, e.g., bar charts, waterfall charts, Marimekko charts and Gantt charts. It consists of a Microsoft Office add-in for PowerPoint and Excel, which integrates seamlessly with these applications. Some features overlap with those provided by built-in charts in Office 2016.
