About Andreia Duarte
Born and raised in Lisbon I was from early on curious about how the world works, including us humans. I have pursued a Bachelor in Biology followed by a Master in Medical Biochemistry, where I developed my drive to research human diseases. After working on cystic fibrosis, colorectal cancer and malaria during the first years after my studies, I have finally decided on the organ I was most fascinated about: the brain. I moved to the Netherlands in 2017, where I joined the UMC Utrecht to study the role of non-coding RNAs in brain pathology, such as epilepsy, SMA and ALS. After obtaining my doctoral degree in 2022, I joined an exciting biotech (start-up) company, VectorY, as a Scientist. Currently, I am involved in the preclinical studies for novel therapeutic strategies against ALS.
About Tom van den Brule
During my master program, I wanted to experience the difference between research in academia and industry. I learned during my internship in industry that it is beneficial to have a PhD to reach the more challenging R&D positions. After my PhD, I joined the microbiology team at Unilever R&D Nutrition & Ice Cream as a microbiological modeller. In my role I am responsible for microbiological risk assessments of The Vegetarian Butcher products to ensure that they are microbiologically safe until the end of their shelf-life. In addition, I am involved in various preservation projects as data scientist.
