Life Sciences Seminar - To PhD or not to PhD

Life Sciences Seminar

Broad-topic seminar organised by the GSLS together with career services.

In this Life Sciences Seminar 3 alumni of the Graduate School will answer several questions fired at them by our research project coordinator. This panel discussion will reveal some pros and cons of doing a PhD project. The panelists are currently working in industry or with the government, while some of have obtained their PhD and others did not.

Panelist are a postdoctoral researcher, a senior project manager at Genmab that completed a PhD, and policy officer with the government.

The end of the academic year is the time where students are forced to think about their choices within the second year of their master, and where second year students need to think about their future career. One of the obvious options as a life scientist is to proceed working in research and to apply for a PhD position. But is a PhD something for you? Or would you rather proceed to a career in industry or with the government?

(How) Does the completion of a PhD project benefit your career possibilities? What skills do you gain from a PhD project? On the other hand, what difference does it make? Do you really need a PhD degree to be eligible for certain job positions? These are just a few questions that might arise when deciding to start a PhD project. The panelist will share their experience, and this might help you in deciding if a PhD is something for you!

Drinks and profile Q&A

After the seminar there will be drinks in the restaurant of the Educatorium from 5 pm to 6:30 pm. Come and join the drinks to network with fellow Life Sciences students and the speakers! Furthermore, our profile coordinators will be present during the drinks for an informal Q&A! If you are still unsure which profile you want to do or are doubting between profiles, join this session!
