Academic calendar

Semester I: last week of August - 3rd week of December
Semester II: 2nd week of January - 2nd week of May

Orientation generally commences in the last week of August for Semester I and in the 2nd week of January for Semester II.

Exams take place mid-December for Semester I and late April until the 2nd week of May for Semester II.

Please note that there is a semester overlap when you go to this university during the second semester.

Students must select courses that are at least 60% within their major.

All areas.

Note:

  • The faculties of Medicine, Psychology and Pharmaceutical Sciences are restricted
  • The faculties of Law and Economics do not accept undergraduate students
  • To be accepted at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, you need to have adequate academic background knowledge in this area of study.

Language of instruction

The main language of instruction is Icelandic. Several faculties offer a steadily increasing number of courses in English.

Housing assistance

The University of Iceland does not provide or guarantee housing for students.

The supply of on-campus housing is very limited and most students live off-campus. Please note that the demand for apartments for rent in Reykjavik is very high and finding accommodation can be very difficult.

Estimated living costs are around 224,333 ISK per month. This is around 1,480 EUR. (Estimate from 2023).

Grading system: 0.00 – 10.00 (in steps of 0.5)
