Academic calendar

UCLA academic year is based on the quarter system: 3 terms, 10 weeks each. 

Fall term: approximately mid September – mid December 
Winter term: approximately early January  – mid March  
Spring term: approximately late March – mid June

  • If you are interested in an exchange period at UCLA, please contact the International Office before applying in Osiris.
  • For research master students' application for UCLA, one reference letter of the programme coordinator is needed.
  • If selected for the exchange, a mentor at UCLA will be requested before applying at the guest university.
Areas of study open to exchange students

Students must enrol in a minimum of 8 units per quarter. Students can take courses in the Humanities and Arts. Some undergraduate academic departments have course restrictions, such as Theater, Film and Television.

Housing assistance

On-campus housing is available but not guaranteed. Exchange students must be enrolled full-time (12 or more units for undergraduates and 8 or more units for graduates) to apply for UCLA housing.

If on-campus housing is not available, the Community Housing Office provides information about housing possibilities in the area, including apartments, rooms, hotels, and other accommodations.

Estimated living costs per month

This information is subject to change. It is meant to be an indication. Costs may differ due to personal circumstances.

The cost of living in Los Angeles may be significantly higher than what most students are used to. Although expenses will vary depending on each student's personal budget and needs, UCLA estimates the minimum cost of living to be about $6,500 per quarter and up to $27,000 for a full academic year.

Exchange students are required to purchase the UCLA Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) which meets immigration and campus requirements for J-1 visa holders.
