ELAN: Universidad de Salamanca

The University of Salamanca is a destination within the European Liberal Arts Network (ELAN) for University College Utrecht students, located in Salamanca, Spain. UCU students are welcome to choose courses from Faculties of Philology, Geography and History and Philosophy.  ELAN students are invited to choose any module from the regular undergraduate offerings of these three Faculties (about 1300 modules in total), most of them taught in Spanish. Courses from other Faculties in the University could easily also be available. The policy of the University is in general terms very flexible in this, with the idea of facilitating the experience of incoming exchange students.

Semesters available

We recommend going in the Spring semester, because the academic calendar matches UCU’s semester dates better in Spring.

Language of instruction

This destination has a language of instruction other than English. This means that you need to have at least a language proficiency level of CEFR B2 Spanish. You need to complete Spanish Language and Culture II (UCHUMSPA21) or get an exemption from the UCU Language & Culture coordinator, and it is your own responsibility to achieve at least B2 Spanish. This language requirement is partly for your own protection, so you can take courses at the same level as you do at UCU, and partly because we believe it allows you to have an experience abroad that is more immersive, enriching and culturally valuable to you.

At the University of Salamanca, most courses are taught in Spanish.

Situation

Salamanca is a city of some 150,000 inhabitants in the Spanish inlands. It has a rich medieval historical center, of which the university buildings are a central part. Much of it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Find out more here. It has a warm, continental climate. Winter is slightly warmer than Utrecht, but in summer temperatures tend to be between 20 and 35 degrees at all times.

Student life

The university doesn’t have one central campus, rather its facilities are spread throughout the city (most in the center). Many of its older buildings are medieval and tourist sites in their own right. Click here for a map. There are over 30,000 students, including 9,000 foreign students.

The university has offices which organize cultural and sports activities.

Student experiences

Universidad de Salamanca is a new destination, and therefore we have not received feedback from our students yet. Be the first UCU student to explore Salamanca!
