Entrepreneurship

Goal

Entrepreneurship has become increasingly prominent in knowledge based economies. Individuals have to become more alert for how they can create new value in all kinds of settings. The creation of new knowledge is a source of various new opportunities, and jobs for life are a thing of the past. How do people successfully identify, evaluate and pursue opportunities for new value creation? In this minor you will be made aware of the different types of entrepreneurship you can pursue, and you will get acquainted with the relevant knowledge and skills for acting entrepreneurially, and building new ventures.
This is a minor for non-Economics students. Are you a student of the bachelor's programme Economics and Business Economics? Then you might consider the minor Social Entrepreneurship (English) or Sociaal Ondernemerschap (Dutch).

Content

Alongside learning about and discussing an academic approach to entrepreneurship, the course Essentials of Entrepreneurship introduces you to the traditional business model generation tools such as the business model canvas, design thinking methods, and lean launchpad customer validation. The results of these methods culminate in start-up pitch-deck, a Dragons Den pitch event, and concise business plan.

The course Introduction to Finance and Accounting focuses on the production, presentation and analysis of corporate financial information for internal and external purposes. This includes making financial statements like balance sheet and income and cash flow statement to make sound judgments about the firm’s financial situation.

The main theme of the course Venture Marketing is how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can create a competitive edge using limited marketing resources. The course introduces several basic marketing concepts using a start-up and SME perspective.

Subsequently, you can choose between:

a. The course Innovation Management focuses on understanding how firms innovate and why timely adaptation when dealing with market dynamics is key to survival and growth is paramount for entrepreneurs and organizations alike. In the quest for sustainable competitive advantage, companies must become adaptive, faster, more agile, and proactive in the game of innovation. In short, companies need to learn how to be entrepreneurial and innovative in their operations, markets and industries.

b. The Internship Entrepreneurship and Innovation provides you the opportunity to gain experience in applying and developing academic knowledge in professional practice, to create new value and to discover future career opportunities.
