Academic calendar

Calendar

The academic year is divided into two semesters: autumn semester (September to January) and spring semester (February to June).

All faculties use the semester structure except for the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Master’s programme in Global Health. Here, the courses are organised in a block structure, dividing the academic year (60 ECTS) into four nine-week blocks.

Courses taught in English

Course catalogue

Most science courses are open for international students with the right prerequisites. Most courses have specific requirements and usually require at least some academic background in natural sciences.

The majority of English-taught courses are master’s courses, but some departments do offer bachelor level courses in English as well. 3rd- and 4th-year bachelor students, who meet the requirements are allowed to register for master's courses. The Faculty of Science offers only very few English-taught courses in sports science/physical education.

  • If you are coming to the  UCPH Faculty of Science (Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry & Physics) on an Erasmus agreement between your home university and the Faculty of Science directly, then you are required to take a minimum of 22.5 ECTS at the Faculty of Science per semester.
  • If you are coming to the UCPH Faculty of Health & Medical Sciences (Pharmacy), you are free to select courses both from that faculty and the others at UCPH.

Open Elective Courses

Every semester, the University of Copenhagen offers a range of popular courses that are open to all international students, regardless of their field of study. Many of the courses focus on issues relating to Danish culture, history, and society, while others can be of general interest to students.

There are no admission requirements for these courses, although there can be limited places.

Housing, including utilities: typically 4,000–10,000 DKK/month
Food and daily expenses: 2,000–3,000 DKK/month
Books and other study materials: 1,500–2,000 DKK/semester
Local public transportation: 380–1,000 DKK/month if you travel every day*

*To save money, we recommend that you consider buying a used bicycle, which you can get for around 800-1,500 DKK.

Tipping
Tipping is only customary in Denmark when service has been particularly good. Taxi fares and restaurant bills include service charges and therefore you are not expected to add extra to that.
